Professional Biography

Theodore (Ted) M. Jones has more than 25 years of experience focusing on wealth transfer for his clients in personal, inter-family, and high level business transactions.  Mr. Jones focuses his practice in the areas of tax, estate planning, probate and corporate law, with a particular emphasis on multi-generational, family-owned companies. He also has considerable experience acting as corporate counsel responsible for a wide range of legal matters as well as supervision of outside counsel, including litigation, tax, real estate, oil and gas, and entertainment law counsel.

Mr. Jones is Board Certified in Tax Law and Estate Planning and Probate Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.  He is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas and the U.S. Tax Court.  Mr. Jones is licensed in Texas, having graduated from Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law (LL.M. and J.D.).  He is a member of the State Bar of Texas and the Dallas Bar Association.

Selected Achievements

• Oversight of the tax structure of a multi million dollar real estate portfolio, saving potentially $40,000,000-$50,000,000 over the life of portfolio sales.
• Advised and participated in the planning and implementation of donation of real estate with retained interest, resulting in monetary incentives from city and county entities worth several million dollars more than the land initially donated.
• Recommended and implemented changes in ownership structure and accounting for aircraft, saving ownership $500,000 per year in property tax.
• Tax counsel in $650,000,000 sale of large manufacturing company.
• Developed strategy and spearheaded innovative reporting position using “Claim of Right Doctrine” to obtain tax refunds in excess of $5,000,000 without IRS challenge.
